The South Australian State Marathon Titles have been absent from the racing calendar for many years. We hope that the new format and the seasonal timing of this year’s event may again make the championships a regular calendar event.

The State Titles were historicaly held in early to mid September. We have elected to reschedule this in July for the following reasons;

  • Local squad members of the Australian Marathon team will have been selected and in the final phase of their preperation.
  • These athletes will most likely still be in the country and this gives them a chance to get a good hit out before going away.
  • Sprint paddlers will still be in the endurance phase of their preperation and would benefit from such racing.
  • Most local paddlers will still be distance fit from the RPM held in June.
  • The event schedule also fits neatly into the Winter LD period.

It is hoped that if sucessful, other clubs would host the championships in turn. This gives competitors the opportunity to compete on different courses each year.

What age group should you paddle in? The link below takes you to an extract of the ICF marathon rules.

Reference to age begins at the bottom of the first page. Essentially though, your category age is the age you turn on the year of competition.

If you turned 16 in April, you may compete in Under 16s even though you are now 17.

If you turn 45 in November, you may race in 45+ despite only being 44 on race day.

Additionally, Junior may elect to compete in older age groups up to Open. Open paddlers may only paddle Open. Veteran paddlers may elect to compete in a younger age group, down to Open.
