Flatwater Sprint Racing

Flatwater Sprint Racing

Racing on flat water is an Olympic sport, and the Canoe SA Flat-water Racing Committee is responsible for organising the sport in South Australia.
Sprint involves racing canoes or kayaks on a course with lanes over the prescribed distances of 200, 500 or  1000metres. Long distance events are also available on a larger lap course with distances of between 2500m and 5000m.

Sprint racing is an Olympic discipline with intense competition being held at  Olympic Games. SASI scholarship holders, Kate Barclay and Susan Tegg represented Australia at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Kate in Ladies K4 500m and Susan in Ladies K2 500m.

The major sprint clubs in South Australia are West Lakes, Holdfast Bay, Onkaparinga, Christian Brothers College and Encounter Paddling canoe clubs. There are six major regattas held over the summer season culminating with the State Championships in February and then leading onto the National Championships in March.

Regatta racing is open to paddlers of all ages and all skill levels from beginners to the elite. Most of the clubs offer some form of development and coaching for all paddling skill levels.

Regattas are normally held at A. M. Ramsay Regatta Course, Oarsmen Reserve, Military Road, West Lakes. Events usually begin at 8:30am with canoe/kayak sprint events (races 1000m or less) held in the morning, marathon (long distance races) are usually held in the afternoon, commencing from about 1:30pm. For marathon races buoys are placed at each end of the course and the race may include several circuits of the course with the finish line at the regatta course tower.

Please contact your local club if you would like to find out how you can get involved.
